WHAT IS AWSCA?

The Automotive Warranty & Contract Service Association (AWSCA) is composed of industry members including finance companies, marketers, administrators, insurers, and software providers.  The Board of Directors is currently composed of Rebecca Howard (Warranty Finance, LLC) President, Scott McMillan (MEPCO Finance Corporation) Vice President, Carter Patterson (Forte Data Systems, Inc) Secretary/Treasurer, Marci Johnson (Summit Finance, Inc), Paul Sporn (Royal Administration Services) and Matthew Weil (American Guardian Warranty Services, Inc).

Helen MacMurray, Esquire, the former Chief of the Consumer Protection Section of the Ohio Attorney General’s office serves as legal advisor.  She has worked with several industry groups dealing with issues similar to those facing AWSCA.

The organization is professionally managed by Larry Hecker, CAE, who has several decades of association experience, including the formation and direction of 12 different industry groups which developed standards and certification programs.  He was most recently President of the Automotive Maintenance and Repair Association and the Motorist Assurance Program.

Best Practices – Code of Conduct: A Code of conduct/ethics called Best Practices was developed and presented to regulators who govern this industry.  Members have received initial training on effective ways of adopting and implementing the best practices into their current programs assuring that each member and their parent companies are compliant with the law.  The Code is a "working document" with revisions made as necessary.

Regulatory Guide – The organization has developed a compliance guide for members.  It will highlight the requirements for marketing into individual states, registration, etc.   Follow-up training seminars will be held.  In addition, strategies for regulator and consumer advocate outreach will be addressed among other important issues.

Certification of companies – Planned for fall 2009 is the development and implementation of a certification program for companies that follow the (then updated) Best Practices with additional requirements. This program will be run and monitored by a third-party auditing company.
